Global Classroom 2017: Bangkok, 22-26 May 2017

The Global Classroom 2017 is the yearly event of the Global Campus of Human Rights that gathers academics, experts and students from different regions of the world with the aim of creating an international forum of discussion on current issues of human rights and democracy. The topic of this year will be securitisation and the impact on human rights and democracy.

The refugee/migration crisis, the emergence of new conflicts and terroristic attacks have been accompanied by an increasing trend towards securitisation and the surge of populism in many countries. Securitisation has become the main tool used by governments to increase their power, limit civil society, and challenge democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. There has been a general increase of investment in policing, surveillance, and search and seizure laws. Restrictions have been also imposed on the rights of assembly, association and right to privacy. What are the Regional challenges caused by securitisation? Who/What are the actors and factors of risks? What are the Human Rights and Human Security responses?

The Global Classroom will address these questions by mapping global trends in securitisation and looking in the various regions at the use of national security in the domains of regulating human mobility, anti-terrorism law and policy and its influence on the protection of human rights/ human security. Secondly, it will also explore the nexus between human rights – human security – human development to analyse the civic responses which can be supported in responding to the challenges and risks linked to securitisation.

The conference is organised by the European Inter-University Center for Human Rights and Democratisation and the Institute for Human Rights and Peace Studies of Mahidol University within the framework of the Global Campus of Master’s Programmes and Diplomas in Human Rights and Democratisation, funded by the European Union.

This conference is also realised in partnership with the Council of Europe and represents one satellite event of the 2017 World Forum for Democracy in Strasbourg.
