ERMA, European Regional Master's Programme in Democracy and Human Rights in South East Europe

Structure and Content
ERMA is a one year, full-time programme implemented from November until the end of October. It consists of two semesters divided in three terms.
To obtain the degree, students are required to attend and actively participate in all of the academic and practical activities.
From November to Mid-June (30 ECTS)
Term I - University of Sarajevo
The first term is taking place at the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Sarajevo from November to mid-June.
Students are taught by lecturers and academic tutors from the participating universities, members of the "International Network Europe and the Balkans" as well as experts from IGOs and NGOs. It is structured in six educational clusters, three elective courses, and the midterm exam, together awarding 30 ECTS.
Alongside with the lectures and seminars, students have also visits to state institutions, International and intergovernmental organizations present and NGOs active in the field of human rights and democracy in Bosnia and Herzegovina and beyond. Also, throughout the lecturing period in Sarajevo, the students can follow seminars and workshops organized by the academic tutors of the programme, as well as by guest lecturers. In addition in this term, there are two field trips to Mostar and Srebrenica.
The structure of the lectures and its research dimension are shaped in such a way to emphasize a shared consciousness among students about the democratic development and the human rights promotion, as well as their protection and implementation in the SEE region.
Alongside with the lectures and seminars, students have also visits to state institutions, international and intergovernmental organizations, as well as to NGO's active in the field of human rights and democracy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Moreover, students take part in two academic field trips to Mostar and Srebrenica/Potočari.
From Mid-June to the end of October(30 ECTS)
Term II - Internship period, South East European Region
During the second term students serve internships in selected partner organizations working in the field of human rights and democracy throughout the SEE Region. Students spend six weeks in NGOs, governmental institutions, think-tanks and research institutes across the region.
The placement is aimed at boosting students' professionalization as well as conducting field research and data gathering related to their MA thesis topic.
Aiming to promote mobility, diversity and the experience of a novel context, the rule of the programme is that the country of destination for the placement has to differ from the country of citizenship of the student.
The host countries are: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia.
The international experience granted by the internship helps students to develop professional expertise in intercultural environment and promote mobility of human capital in the region. The internship period awards 10 ECTS and is a compulsory part of the programme.

Term III - Mobility period, University of Bologna
The third term takes place in Italy, at the University of Bologna's Residential Centre in Bertinoro, from the beginning of September until mid-October.
Here students write up their master's theses under the assistance of the academic tutors, and follow short seminar courses aimed at addressing particular issuese of interest.
Alongside with that, they participate in a number field trips and study visits, including a visit to the University of Bologna and its historical premises.
Once having completed their final works, students travel back to Sarajevo for their Master viva. This term awards 20 ECTS.
